Walter Frisch es H. Harold Gumm/Harry and Albert von Tilzer Professor of Music en la Universidad de Columbia. Ha sido galardonado en dos ocasiones con ASCAP-Deems Taylor Awards, y sus investigaciones han recibido ayudas del National Endowment for the Humanities, la Fundación Alexander von Humboldt y el Center for Scholars and Writers de la New York Public Library.
